Ten hidden ships. Find them first.

The game as it is played on squared paper: 10 ships in 20 cells, none touching another, and every hit earns another shot. Your browser referees, and a bot fires back.

Against a bot, no account and no download: your browser referees. It works on a phone.

A fleet the referee accepted: ten ships, and water all round each.

How a game goes

Two grids, two fleets, and one question asked a cell at a time.

  1. Place your fleet

Arrange ten ships in secret — or shuffle — so that no two touch, not even at a corner.

  2. Fire

Pick a cell in the bot's waters. The answer comes at once: miss, hit, or sunk.

  3. Hit, and fire again

A hit or a sinking keeps your turn; a miss hands it over. Sink the whole fleet first to win.

Every rule, in order

The referee keeps the paper

What is certain is crossed out for you

Ships never touch, so the corners of a hit and the border of a sunk ship can only be water. On paper you cross them out yourself; here the referee does, and a shot at them is refused rather than wasted.

A ship of three sunk across the top, the whole border round it crossed out, and a miss that passed the turn.

4 levels

A bot for every player

Each level searches differently, and each beats the one below it. Every bot sees only what its own shots have told it.

  1. 1

    Beginner

Fires at random, and leaves a hit ship to chance: about 66 shots to sink a fleet.

  2. 2

    Casual

Fires at random and finishes every ship it hits: about 58.5 shots.

  3. 3

    Steady

Searches along a diagonal stripe the longest ship must cross: about 56.6 shots.

  4. 4

    Sharp

Counts every way the ships afloat could lie, and fires where most of them cross: about 55.1 shots.
